Description
The Western Wall, in Old Jerusalem, is known by many as "The Wailing Wall". It is the only wall remaining from the Jewish temple. The First Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 587–586 BCE, and the Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. This was the most holy place for the Jewish people and still remains for those practicing the Jewish faith as well as those of the Christian faith.
This wall is now part of the Muslim Dome of the Rock and is traditionally a source of contention between the two faiths.
When people visit the Western Wall, women and men are separated for prayer as both faiths require.
